New England Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence (NECPGV) offers a 27 minute video (DVD format) to community stations. The video is a talk, given by NECPGV director, Cathie Whittenburg, to the Ethical Society of Boston in September of 2007, as part of NECPGV’s Red Flag Campaign (www.redflagcampaign.org).
The talk seeks to educate the audience about current gun laws, how guns enter the legal market, how gun laws vary from state to state, how Maine’s weak gun laws impact Massachusetts crime, and measures that can be taken to prevent gun violence through guns laws, both federal and state.
Maine has the weakest gun laws in the nation. There is no waiting period, no firearm licensing or registration, no safety training requirements and Maine allows the private sale of guns with no background run, no records kept, no questions asked. This is how easy it is for guns to fall into the wrong hands. Maine has also become a leading source state for crime guns in Massachusetts.
Through the video NECPGV works to raise public awareness of the illegal flow of firearms throughout New England and encourage policy solutions such as a universal background check on all guns sold.
